The Chama River Valley is known as one of the top spots for outdoor recreation in New Mexico.  At 7,800 feet above sea level, the Chama enjoys a cool alpine climate, a lot like nearby Southern Colorado.  Unlike most of New Mexico, Chama’s recreation is focused on water and moist mountain forests.  In fact, most of the water you find in Santa Fe or Albuquerque begins right here as winter snows and summer showers.  The abundance of lakes, rivers and forests makes Chama a recreational Mecca.

Kayaking, canoeing and rafting are as close as the Chama River.  For a fun afternoon of recreation, you can float the upper reaches of the Chama River.  Or for a real thrill, sign up with one of the Chama area outfitters for a white water adventure on the lower Chama, through the dramatic canyons of the Rio ChamaWild and Scenic River corridor.

Sailing enthusiasts flock to Heron Lake.  Known for its scenic vistas, Heron is a perfect place for quiet recreation and contemplation.

Water-skiers have their territory too.  Nearby El Vado Lake is a favorite recreation destination for all types of water craft owners.

Opportunities for the land-lover abound at Chama’s Mundy Ranch and Chama’s public recreation areas.  Hiking, birding, wildlife photography, mountain biking and herb and mushroom hunts are some popular warm weather recreational activities.  In the fall, hunters take to the woods in search of Bull Elk and Mule Deer.

Winter recreational sports are as varied as you are.  On Chama’s Mundy Ranch, you can cross-country ski, snowshoe or ride your snowmobile.  Nearby, you’ll find groomed trails throughout the National Forests and the Sargent Wildlife area.

As if all of these choices were not enough, you can round out your recreational experience with a bracing ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railway, a day of golf and soaking at nearby Pagosa Springs or downhill skiing at Wolf Creek, known for having the highest snow levels in all of Colorado.
